Via Ferrata, Haystacks and tarns
Get ready for an unforgettable weekend starting with a mountain walk into classic Wainwright country.
Saturday's guided mountain walk is the classic Lakeland mountain of Haystacks, a mountain the famous writer of the Lake District, Alfred Wainwright, stated has his favourite of all the Lake Districts fells. The walk provides excellent views towards Buttermere lake, together with fine vistas of much higher Lakeland mountains but none quite as varied walking terrain and enveloped in the same mystique as Haystacks.
This first day is the perfect build up to what's in store on Sunday as we climb the UK's only Via Ferrata, an experience you will be re-telling for years to come. Via Ferrata is Italian for 'Iron Way' and the system has been used in the Alps for more than a century. Honister's Via Ferrata in the Lake District is an adventure climbing system that uses a permanently fixed cable for safety and protection up the rock face of the old miners' route. You don't have to be an experienced rock climber to enjoy the Via Ferrata, although you will experience the same thrills but in the knowledge that you are securely fastened at all times. At the top is a Zip Wire At the top is a Zip Wire to cap a superb Lakeland adventure activity.
Special Information: *Honister's Via Ferrata is physically demanding and challenging but does not require a high level of body strength. All participants in Honister's Via Ferrata must be reasonably fit and healthy, a minimum of 1m 30/ 4ft 3inches tall, and must weigh less than 20 stones/ 128kg with a waist (above the navel) measuring not more than 110cm/43 inches and thighs measuring not more than 70cm/27 inches.
Saturday night evening meal can either eat at the hostel which serves very good meals or go to the local country inn close by.

YHA Buttermere is a Lakeland slate house offering peace and tranquillity to walkers. The shores of Crummock Water and Buttermere are within a stone's throw of the property and walks for all levels of experience start from the doorstep.
After a good days walk, relax in the lounge with views of Red Pike and along to High Stile and enjoy a fantastic meal in the recently refurbished restaurant along with local ales, organic wines and spirits from around the world.
